The Gospel of the Cross/Different Methods of Evangelism (VS). 1. Read Acts 17:22, 23, 28, 32-34 (one by one) and answer: a. What was Paul's method of preaching in Athens? (v. 22 – praise; v. 23 – connection with what they already believed; v. 28 – reference to Greek authors: "in Him we live and move and have our being" – Epimenides; "we are His offspring" – Arath) b. Name 3 reactions to Paul's words (v. 32 – "they mocked," "we will hear you about this another time"; v. 34 – "they believed") c. Was the sermon in Athens successful? (v. 34 – "then some men joined him and believed, among whom was Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris, and others with them") 2. Read 1 Cor. 2:1, 2 (one by one) and answer the questions: a. What was Paul's sermon like in Corinth? (v. 1 – "not in excellency of speech or wisdom"; v. 1:17 – "not in wisdom of speech") b. What does the phrase "I determined to know nothing among you except" mean – v. 2? (I decided on this preaching strategy) c. What could have prompted such a decision? Read 1 Cor. 1:22, 23 (one by one) and answer the questions: a. What were the Greeks seeking? (v. 22 – "wisdom") b. Where in the Apostolic Scriptures is a similar approach attested? (Acts 17:18-20) c. What was the crucified Christ to the Greeks? (v. 23 – "foolishness") d. Give a similar example in the Bible (Acts 26:23, 24) 2. Have you encountered a similar difficulty today? IV. The Crucified Messiah (SR). 1. Read 1 Cor. 1:18-21 (one by one) and answer the questions: a. What are the limits of the mind's ability to know God? (v. 21 – "in the wisdom of God the world by its wisdom did not know God") b. What does the form of the word "saved" – v. 18 – reveal? (Salvation is an external action; man cannot save himself, only God can – see v. 29 – "lest any flesh should boast before God"; v. 31 – "let him who boasts boast in the Lord") c. How does salvation begin? (v. 21 – "God was pleased to save through the foolishness of the preaching" – God's self-revelation) d. What is the nature of the "word of the cross" (v. 18)? ("the power of God") 2. Share how you experience the power of God's word! V. Christ – God's power and God's wisdom (Testament). 1. Read 1 Cor. 1:24, 25, 30 (one by one) and answer the questions: a. How is Jesus the answer to the Jews' questions? (v. 24 – "God's power"; v. 25 – "the weakness of God is stronger than men") b. How is this reflected in 1 Corinthians 2:4, 5?
