In this video, I explain about OVARIAN FOLLICULAR CYST! A follicular cyst appears whenever a follicle doesn't ovulate and accumulates fluid inside it! As a reminder, in a normal menstrual cycle—about 28 days—the ovarian follicle develops until about halfway through the cycle, or day 14! At this point, ovulation occurs, which is the release of an egg by the mature follicle! If this egg isn't released for some reason, the follicle begins to accumulate fluid inside, increasing in size... This is what we call a follicular cyst! Follicular cysts are the most common ovarian cyst and are quite common in women of childbearing age! They usually don't cause symptoms and are found after a transvaginal ultrasound! Conceptually, we should only consider follicles larger than 3 cm as a follicular cyst! Why do I say this? It's very common to see reports or ultrasounds in medical practice calling typical images smaller than 3 cm "cysts"! These images, which were labeled cysts, are actually dominant or periovulatory follicles! These cysts don't require treatment because they are what we call functional cysts, meaning they are expected from a normal menstrual cycle! These cysts tend to regress over time and disappear after 2 or 3 menstrual cycles! Treatment with medication or even surgery is an exception!
