10 Cornish Fishing Villages That Still Feel Like a 1950s Harbour

Cornish fishing villages where the working fleet still goes to sea — 10 places along the Cornish coast that still feel like a 1950s harbour, because in many cases that's exactly what they are. In this video, we explore the surviving working ports of Cornwall, from the tiny inshore coves of Cadgwith, Coverack, Sennen, Boscastle and Mousehole to the larger working fleets of Looe, Mevagissey, Padstow, Port Isaac, and Newlyn — the largest fishing port in England by tonnage and value. We also tell the story of the Cornish pilchard fishery — once the lifeblood of the entire coast, exporting 122 million fish to Italy in 1847 alone — its near-extinction in the early twentieth century, and its small modern revival under the rebranded name Cornish sardines, now landed by around thirteen ring-net vessels into the same harbours their great-grandfathers worked. Featuring the huer of Newquay, whose Cornish cry of "Hevva! Hevva!" once launched whole villages to the boats. 🔗 Sources & further reading: Cornwall Good Seafood Guide — history of Cornish fishing — https://cornwallgoodseafoodguide.org.uk Newlyn Archive — https://www.newlynarchive.org.uk Seafish — UK fishing industry data and fleet surveys — https://www.seafish.org Cornwall Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority — https://www.cornwall-ifca.gov.uk Newquay Huer's Hut & National Trust — https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk 👉 Subscribe for more videos on the history of the British Isles that mainstream content rushes past. #Cornwall #CornishFishing #FishingVillages #Newlyn #Mousehole #Cadgwith #BritishHistory #UKCoast #CornishHistory #Sardines #Documentary
