ABE BAUM - Commanded WWII's Infamous Hammelburg Raid to Rescue Gen. Patton's Son in law
Interview with Abraham J. Baum San Diego, CA January 6, 2001 Interviewer: Steven Karras Photography: David Hallinger Abraham J Baum (1921-2013) commanded the famed "Task force Baum," sent by General George Patton to liberate the POWs at Stalag Oflag XIII-B, near Hammelburg. Baum was part of the 4th Armored Division unit that liberated the Ohrdruf Concentration Camp. Awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy in Germany. After the war, Baum remained inexorably connected to his military family by working with veterans' organizations wherever he lived. He founded the Rancho Bernardo Veteran's Memorial, and was instrumental in starting a program that sent veterans from all military conflicts to middle and high schools to share their wartime experiences with the students. Baum provided counsel to Moshe Dayan, Teddy Kollek, and Haganah leadership in preparation for Israel's war of independence in 1948. Buddy Pictures (c) 2023 In Loving Memory of David Hallinger
