Sheringham Level Crossing

Wednesday September 22 2021 at 11.08. The 10.45 Holt to Sheringham (11.06) train on the 5.25 mile long North Norfolk Heritage Railway. It is pulled by 53809 built in 1925 and designed for hauling heavy goods trains. Eleven were built and 2 remain. In 1929 when going slowly through a tunnel near Bath its crew were overcome by its smoke and the train ran away downhill crashing into a goods yard. The driver and two others were killed. At this crossing in 2018 a train travelling at 10 mph hit a car, badly damaging it. The car driver was later prosecuted and fined. This line was closed by British Railways in 1964. A preservation society which had already tried unsuccessfully to preserve 3 different lines, took over this line in 1965 when much of the track had already been lifted. While some may still call this Sweetbriar Lane LC, it is the main active crossing in Sheringham next to Sheringham Golf Club.
