Battlefield 1 Campaign Mission I: Through Mud and Blood Part 2/2 Section 3: Breakdown Section 4: Steel on Steel Unfortunately, I had to split Through Mud and Blood into two parts. My max recording length is one hour, and I can only combine clips for a total of 60 minutes. The only downside to the PS5, am I right? This first mission follows a British Mark V tank crew of an unnamed unit during the Second Battle of Cambrai. The tank was named "Black Bess," which was an actual tank during WWI, but was a British Mark IV Female tank (meaning she was only armed with machine guns). "Black Bess" saw combat during the First Battle of Cambrai on November 20, 1917. Although the unit in the game is unnamed, it could have hypothetically belonged to one of three battalions in the British Army Tank Corps: 3rd, 11th, or 12th Tank Battalions. The real Second Battle of Cambrai did not take place on October 17, 1918, as the introductory cinematic suggested. It actually took place on October 8-10, 1918. The Allied forces were made up of men from the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, and India. The main force, however, was primarily British and Canadian. As the outro cinematic stated, the British did have over 300 tanks participate in the battle. Those numbers could rise to over 400 if you consider other tanks that served supporting roles, such as transport. The Germans, on the other hand, had almost no tanks. The research I did suggested that the Germans had between 24 and 120 tanks. The Germans produced hardly any tanks domestically. Possibly, up to 20 domestically produced German tanks participated in the Second Battle of Cambrai. The sources I could not validate. However, there is very strong evidence and recordings of the Germans commandeering abandoned British tanks, capturing them, painting them over with Iron Crosses, and using them against the Allied Forces. From what I can tell, somewhere between 4 and 100 tanks were captured and used by the Germans. I think the number is closer to 25, based on what most sources say. Prior to their push, the British staged at the Canal du Nord. This is a canal directly west of the town of Cambrai. Unlike what the intro says, the staging did not take place in Ribecourt (now Ribecourt-Dreslincourt), which is an hour south of Cambrai. On October 8, the Allied forces broke the Hindenburg Line. This was the defensive line established by the Germans on the Western Front, reinforced with concrete pillboxes and machine guns, and extended miles deep in some places. This was evidenced in both the Over the Top and Fog of War sections. That same day, they took the town of Cambrai. After taking Cambrai, the Allied forces encountered stiffer resistance than they had when they took the town. The German Army had dug in and fought back east of the town. The Second Battle of Cambrai officially ended on October 10, 1918. The British and Commonwealth nations had won but at a high price. The Allied forces had suffered between 20,000 to 30,000 casualties (killed, wounded, missing, or captured). The Germans suffered around 20,000 casualties with at least 10,000 being captured. Notable soldiers of the Second Battle of Cambrai include: Capt Coulson Norman Mitchell - Capt Mitchell was a Canadian engineering officer and served as a tunneler in 1917. He was awarded the Military Cross (the UK/Commonwealth's third highest award for combat valor; equivalent to our Silver Star) in 1917. At the Second Battle of Cambrai, Capt Mitchell was serving with the 4th Engineer Bn of the Canadian Engineers. On the night of October 8, he was charged with inspect various bridges over Canal de L'Escaut northeast of Cambrai. Upon reaching a bridge, he found lead wires leading to large amounts of demolition charges. He cut the wires and disposed of the charges with the assistance of his NCO. While the bridge could have been blown at anytime, Capt Mitchell held the bridge while under heavy fire. He aided a wounded friendly sentry, killed three of the enemy, and captured 12 until he was reinforced by friendly units. For his actions, Capt Mitchell was awarded the Victoria Cross (the UK/Commonwealth's highest award for combat valor; equivalent to our Medal of Honor). LCpl Henry James Tandey - He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal as a Private for leading two men across No Man's Land and returning with 20 prisoners. As the outro cinematic stated, WWI ended about a month later. The Germans signed the Armistice on November 11, 1918, in a railroad car outside of Compiègne, France. This ended the major combat operations of WWI. However, WWI did not officially end until the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919.
