HP Switch IRF configuration
Phase 1: Preparation (Your PC Setup) Press Win + R, type ncpa.cpl, and hit Enter to open Network Connections. Assign your PC a static IP address in the same subnet as the default switch management IPs. Connect your PC to the management port or a default VLAN port on Switch 1. Phase 2: Configuring Switch 1 (The Master) Your goal here is to ensure this switch wins the election by having a higher priority. Log in to Switch 1 via your web browser. Set Member ID & Priority: Confirm the Member ID is 1. Set the IRF Priority to 32 (Default is 1. Higher means higher priority). Shutdown Physical Ports: * Navigate to the port management section and Shut Down the physical ports you intend to use for the stack cabling (e.g., Ten-GigabitEthernet 1/0/49 and 1/0/50). This is a mandatory safety step in Comware. Bind Ports to IRF Group: Go to the IRF settings. Bind those physical ports to IRF-Port 1/2. (Rule: Port X/1 connects to Port Y/2 on the other switch). Enable Ports & Activate: Go back and Bring UP (Undo Shutdown) the physical ports. Save the configuration. Phase 3: Configuring Switch 2 (The Sub-Switch) Before doing this, disconnect your PC from Switch 1 and plug into Switch 2. Do not connect the stacking cables yet. Log in to Switch 2 via your web browser. Change Member ID & Priority: Change the IRF Member ID from 1 to 2. Note: The switch will usually require a reboot here to renumber its interfaces from 1/0/X to 2/0/X. Set the IRF Priority to 1 (or anything lower than 32). Shutdown Physical Ports: Shut down the corresponding physical ports on Switch 2 (now named 2/0/49 and 2/0/50). Bind Ports to IRF Group: Bind these ports to IRF-Port 2/1. Enable Ports & Save: Bring UP the physical ports. Save the configuration. Phase 4: The Boot Sequence (Crucial Step) To ensure the election happens exactly how you planned without any split-brain drama, follow this sequence: [Switch 1: Master] (Power ON) │ ▼ Wait 2 Minutes (Let it fully boot & become Master) [Switch 2: Slave] (Power ON) Power OFF both switches completely. Connect the IRF physical stacking cables (Cross-connect: Port 1/2 of Switch 1 goes to Port 2/1 of Switch 2). Power ON Switch 1 (Master). Wait roughly 2 minutes until it is fully booted and operational. Power ON Switch 2 (Secondary). #HPE #Networking #HPiswitches #IRF #SwitchStacking #SysAdmin #stacking #GUI #HP #HP1950 #j960A #ccna #Comware #NetworkEngineering
