Gary Sauve on-screen role in The Strange One (1957, 1080p)

Sorry if some of the slides go by a little fast, I read pretty fast so it can be difficult to judge what someone else’s more leisurely reading speed is like) The voice of Gary Sauve (1934 - ) is familiar to fans of Japanese special effects films as Murai, detective Komai and the creepy reporter in the Hong Kong dubs of Matango (1963), Dogora (1964) and Gamera vs. Gaos (1967), respectively. In the earliest days of the Hong Kong dubbing scene, Sauve tended to play the soft-spoken, distinctly American-accented lead protagonist. His dubbing contributions were all uncredited and, until now, unidentified. Prior to September 1962 when he moved to HK and fell in with Ted Thomas (a fact known since 2024, when I found old newspaper articles that linked his name to HK dubbing for the first time in the modern era), Sauve was a stage actor based in Bradenton, Florida, part of the Manatee Players alongside his wife, Barbara Laney (who joined him in HK and picked up dubbing as well, becoming extremely prolific in the early 1970s and famously voicing Roku-san in Godzilla vs. Megalon). Before moving to HK Sauve was also in at least one movie, something revealed in an article on page two of the August 31, 1962 edition of The News (Sarasota, Florida), which I found the night of May 27, 2026. This article was published a day before he left for HK, and gives a lot of biographical details. It is mentioned that he had an uncredited bit part as Sully in The Strange One (1957), a very homoerotic film shot in Florida and set in a southern military school. Sauve is the man with the crew cut and uniform who puts on the cap and has the first audible dialog in this clip starting on the second shot. My dubbing research pals and I had already strongly suspected Sauve was the dub voice he turned out to be, but with my discovery of this role, his name is finally definitively linked to the voice and I couldn't be happier.
