But, watching his comedic roles on screen, few knew that Alexey Smirnov was not only a brilliant actor but also a veteran of the front lines, having stared death in the face for four years. He himself disliked remembering the war. Therefore, one can only guess how difficult it was for him to take on the well-known and uncomedic role of technician Makarych in Leonid Bykov's celebrated war film, "Only Old Men Are Going to Battle." Smirnov's military career is surrounded by myths that have already become deeply ingrained in the minds of his fans. He earned a reputation as a dashing scout and a master of hand-to-hand combat. He was credited with a wound or concussion that prevented him from reaching Berlin, and with the rank of lieutenant, with which he ended the war. His photograph with a German machine gun was unofficially nicknamed "Russian Rambo." Military historian Vladimir Nagirnyak spoke about Alexei Smirnov's true combat career at the "Fate of a Man" Digital History Festival, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory Day.
