Turn Scrap Wood Into Free Generator Fuel All Winter. FEMA Published It. Almost Nobody Knows It.
In the winter of 1944 three quarters of all motor vehicles operating in Sweden were running not on gasoline but on wood. Ordinary scrap wood loaded into steel drums bolted to the sides of trucks, tractors, and buses — producing a combustible gas through controlled oxygen-starved burning that ran internal combustion engines with the same reliability as liquid fuel. Over one million vehicles across wartime Europe operated this way while petroleum supply lines were cut. Germany, Denmark, France, Finland, and Switzerland all maintained significant portions of their civilian transportation and agricultural infrastructure on wood gas because the alternative was not moving at all. When petroleum returned after the war the gasifier-equipped vehicles were converted back to liquid fuel and the knowledge that had kept an entire continent moving vanished from mainstream awareness within a single generation — not because it stopped working but because gasoline was profitable and wood scrap generates no revenue for any fuel company anywhere in the supply chain. In 1989 the Federal Emergency Management Agency published a complete technical manual documenting wood gasification for emergency civilian use — recognizing that petroleum supply disruption through natural disaster or infrastructure failure could be addressed through locally available biomass converted to combustible producer gas. That manual is available at fema.gov right now. It has been there for thirty five years. Wood gasification works by burning wood in a deliberately oxygen-restricted environment where carbon partially oxidizes into carbon monoxide and hydrogen rather than fully oxidizing into spent carbon dioxide. The resulting producer gas burns in a standard generator engine with no modification required. The fuel cost is zero. The wood is already on your property. The FEMA documentation is already published. The Ancient Prepper exists to make sure you read it before the next power outage makes you wish you had. ⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTE: Producer gas from wood gasification contains carbon monoxide which is toxic in enclosed spaces — never operate a wood gasifier indoors or in any space without substantial ventilation. The gas must be cooled and filtered before entering an engine to remove tar and particulate matter that would damage engine components over time. Use only dry untreated wood — treated lumber, painted wood, or wood containing preservatives produces toxic gases during gasification. Engine power output on producer gas is typically twenty to thirty percent lower than on liquid fuel — size your generator engine accordingly. Always consult local regulations before constructing or operating any combustion system. This video is for educational and emergency preparedness purposes only. SOURCES: 1.
