Her image still appears on postcards, chocolate wrappers, and souvenirs sold in Vienna, Budapest, and Munich. Behind Sissi's radiance, however, lay a deeply unhappy woman. Uprooted from the Bavarian fields at the age of fifteen, she found herself immersed in the rigid ceremonial of the Viennese court, which she never accepted. The conflict with her mother-in-law, Archduchess Sophie, the death of her first daughter in Buda, her distance from her son, Rudolf, obsessive beauty rituals, escapes to Madeira and Corfu, and the loneliness of a husband whose matrasses were known throughout Vienna—all of this formed the life of a woman who wore her crown like a burden.
