재활병원 간호사 vs 요양병원 간호사, 나는 어디가 더 맞을까?
"Rehabilitation Hospital Nurse vs. Nursing Hospital Nurse: Which One Is a Better Fit for Me?" Opening Hello. Today, I would like to speak from the perspective of a nurse who has worked in both rehabilitation hospitals and nursing hospitals. When browsing nursing recruitment websites, you will find a vast number of job postings for rehabilitation hospitals and nursing hospitals. This is a choice that nurses in their 40s, 50s, and beyond, often consider at least once when contemplating a career change. However, once you actually enter these two types of hospitals, the atmosphere is completely different from what you might expect. The way patients are treated differs, the way they are discharged looks different, and the sense of fulfillment nurses feel also differs. Today, through real-life clinical examples, I will discuss what kind of personality is better suited for a rehabilitation hospital and what kind of personality is better suited for a nursing hospital. Rehabilitation Hospitals: "A Place to Rise Again" When looking at patients admitted to rehabilitation hospitals, you will see many who have lost the ability to walk due to various reasons, such as cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral infarction, spinal surgery, hip fracture, traffic accidents, and muscle weakness following severe pneumonia. When admitted, they arrive in a wheelchair. Some patients cannot even get out of bed. They wear diapers, and in some cases, a caregiver has to spoon-feed them. However, the situation changes after a few months. In fact, among the patients I met, there was a man in his 50s who had collapsed from a cerebral hemorrhage and could barely move one arm and leg. When he was first admitted, he could not speak properly and struggled even to sit in a wheelchair. But after receiving physical therapy, occupational therapy, and consistent rehabilitation every day, he began walking down the ward hallway holding a walker four months later. On the day of discharge, the patient and his caregiver came to the nursing station and said: "Thanks to you, nurses, we are walking home again." Hearing those words makes the nurses feel a sense of pride as well. Such scenes occur more often than you might think in rehabilitation hospitals. A place where you see patients improving compared to when they first arrived. This is the biggest characteristic of a rehabilitation hospital. A nursing hospital is "a place to spend the last moments together." Conversely, nursing hospitals are a little different. Most inpatients are elderly, suffering from dementia, Parkinson's disease, terminal cancer, or severe stroke, or are often bedridden. There are not many cases where patients improve noticeably like in a rehabilitation hospital. Instead, their condition fluctuates between deterioration and remission. They might be fine one day, but develop pneumonia the next; they might improve slightly again, only to lose consciousness a few months later. Sometimes, a situation arises where you suddenly have to call their guardian. In fact, there was an elderly patient who had stayed at a nursing hospital for over three years. We spent that long time together, changing their position, managing bedsores, performing suctioning, and providing nutrition every day. Eventually, they passed away. A few days later, their guardian visited and said, "Thank you for taking care of my mother all this time." At that moment, my heart felt quite strange. Although there is no "joy of walking out" like in a rehabilitation hospital, there is meaning in having made someone's final moments comfortable. *Personality Types Well-suited for Rehabilitation Hospitals* Rehabilitation hospitals are suitable for people who enjoy seeing changes. People who value a sense of accomplishment. Someone who enjoys seeing results. Someone who enjoys learning new treatments. Someone who gains strength by watching patients gradually improve. If you have these tendencies, a rehabilitation hospital is a good fit. However, there are downsides. The rehabilitation treatment schedule is tight. Expectations from patients and their guardians are high. There is a high risk of falls. Dissatisfaction arises if the patient does not improve quickly. Therefore, there is a relatively high level of tension. *Personality Types Suitable for Nursing Hospitals* Conversely, nursing hospitals are suitable for those who know how to wait. A calm personality rather than an impatient one. Someone who values the process more than the result. Someone who enjoys talking with elderly patients. Someone who likes to build long-term relationships like family. If you have these tendencies, a nursing hospital is a good fit. It is especially well-suited for emotionally warm people. Even if the patient does not improve, you must be able to consider the fact that they spent the day comfortably as meaningful in itself. *Surprisingly, many nurses say this:* Nurses who have worked in r...
