The two most tricky letters in the Italian alphabet are C [chi] and G [gi]. Their pronunciation depends entirely on the vowel that follows them. It’s like in music: if you change one note, the whole melody changes. Let’s look at the two main rules. 1. Soft rule (Sounds [Ч] and [Ж]) If these letters are followed by the vowels E [е] or I [и], then the letters are read softly and gently: • This letter C turns into the sound [Ч] • This letter G turns into the sound [Ж] Let's practice on delicious and beautiful words: • Cena [че́на] - dinner • Cinema [чи́нема] - cinema • Gelato [гела́то] - ice cream (you already know this word!) • Giro [ги́ро] - circle / walk 2. Hard rule (Sounds [К] and [Г]) If these same letters C and G are followed by any other vowels - A, O, U, or any consonant letters, then they instantly become hard: • This letter C turns into a hard sound [К] • This letter G turns into a confident sound [Г] Here are some examples for practice: • Caffè [кафе́] - coffee • Conto [ко́нто] - bill (in a restaurant) • Gatto [га́тто] - cat • Gusto [гу́сто] - taste Now the saving letter H (Akka) Remember, in the first lesson I said that the letter H [ака] is not pronounced? By itself, it is silent, but it has a great superpower! It works as a "shield" that protects the hardness of the sound. If we put the letter H between our tricky part (C or G) and soft vowels (E Live or I), then the magic of softness disappears! The letter H makes them read hard - like [К] and [Г]. • CH + E / I = read as [KE] / [KI] • GH + E / I = read as [GE] / [GI] See how it works in practice. Without this rule, we would never read our favorite dishes: • Spaghetti [spaghetti] — spaghetti (see GH here? That's why we say "spaghetti" and not "spaghetti") • Chitarra [kitarra] — guitar By the way, I play the guitar and sing songs. I have a YouTube channel with my music. I'll leave a link in the description and in the first comment. There are a lot of romantic songs there. • Zucchero [zucchero] — sugar (our friend from the first lesson, remember him?!) • Funghi [funghi] — mushrooms About the author: By the way, for those who don't know me, I'm Vlad Kava, an art historian who teaches Italian. I also have a YouTube channel on art history and a YouTube channel of my personal development school, where I teach women to protect their personal boundaries, build relationships with worthy men, and help them be happy. Links to my other channels will be in the description and in the first comment. Now Italian couple twirls: Letter combinations GLI and GN To sound like a real Italian who emotionally gestures in a square in Rome, you need to master two more iconic letter combinations. They seem complicated, but in fact they are very melodic. These letters GLI are read as a very soft, flowing sound [ЛЙЙ]. It's like you pronounce "l" by pressing your tongue to the roof of your mouth. #i...
