Pentecost: One Gospel, Many Languages! Acts 2 & Christian Unity in Diversity! Not Unite the Kingdom!

On the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came not to erase difference, but to speak through it. Any calls to 'Unite the Kingdom' which ignore the Biblical teaching such as Jesus's words in St Matthew 25:35: “I was a stranger and you invited me in.” and Leviticus 19:34: “The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.” In Acts 2, read in the Church of England and most other Christian churches, people from across the known world gathered in Jerusalem—"Parthians, Medes, Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts), Cretans and Arabs" and we read that each one heard the apostles declaring the mighty works of God in their own language. This is God’s vision of unity: not sameness, but a Spirit-filled diversity where every voice is heard, every culture honoured, and no one is excluded. That vision sits uneasily alongside movements like the “Unite the Kingdom” marches when their rhetoric turns toward suspicion, hostility, or exclusion of migrants. However they present themselves, language that demeans or scapegoats the foreigner is not consonant with the message Christians hear at Pentecost. From the Old Testament’s command to love the stranger, to Jesus himself—born into a displaced family seeking refuge—our faith is rooted in hospitality, not fear. This isn’t about party politics. It’s about the shape of the Kingdom of God. Pentecost reminds us: the Church is most faithful when it reflects the wideness of God’s mercy, not the narrowness of human division. #Pentecost #Acts2 #HolySpirit #ChristianUnity #ChurchOfEngland #BibleTeaching #Immigration #RefugeesWelcome #SocialJustice #JesusChrist #GospelTruth #FaithInAction #DiversityInChrist #KingdomOfGod #Scripture #jesus #God #unitethekingdom
