🎼 In 1911, Gustav Mahler died six months before the premiere of Das Lied von der Erde — a symphony he refused to number, because every composer he worshipped had died right after writing a Ninth. Its final movement, "Der Abschied" (The Farewell), ends with three handwritten words that aren't in the original poem: Ewig. Ewig. Ewig. Forever. Decades later, Leonard Bernstein — the same conductor whose obsession with Mahler was dramatized in Bradley Cooper's Oscar-nominated 2023 film Maestro — spent thirty years recording every Mahler symphony and introducing him to American audiences who'd never heard his name.
