These terms are used as archetypes and should not be understood as biological categories. These distinctions between male and female are symbolic and archetypal, rather than literal or biological. They illustrate the spiritual journey from fragmentation to unity. Mary, Miriam as the Model of Wholeness Within the Gospel of Thomas, Jesus affirms that Mary will attain the same wholeness as others, indicating that she is not excluded, as Simon Peter demands, but rather serves as a model. Symbolism and the Role of Mary By studying the poetic language of the time, it becomes clear that much of scripture should be understood symbolically rather than literally. Mary, or Miriam, is portrayed as the archetype of dualism and the path to unity, wholeness, and awakening. She exemplifies the sacrifice of appearing weak while being an ambassador of The One. Unity in the Lost Gospel of Thomas and Other Scriptures This theme of unity— “the one in the two and the two in the one”—recurs throughout the Lost Gospel of Thomas and other sacred scriptures, such as those found in the Nag Hammadi collection discovered in 1945.
