It is the capital of the Itapúa department and is located approximately 370 km from the country's capital, Asunción, connected by Route PY01. It is an important border commercial hub, maintaining strong ties and influence with the neighboring Argentine city of Posadas. According to the 2022 Paraguayan census, it has a population of 106,842, and its metropolitan area has nearly 200,000.
