Ein Spaziergang durch die Straßen Nürnbergs im Winter, Deutschland

A Brief Overview of Nuremberg's History On July 16, 1050, the manumission of the serf Sigena was documented in Nuremberg. This document is the first written mention of Nuremberg. Its date is considered the city's birthday. In the Late Middle Ages, Nuremberg, as one of the most important cities in the Holy Roman Empire, was designated as the site where every newly elected German king was to hold his first Imperial Diet (Golden Bull, 1356) and where the imperial regalia were kept (1424–1796). The city, whose council consisted of leading merchant families, experienced its economic and cultural heyday in the late 15th and 16th centuries. World-famous artists such as Albrecht Dürer, Adam Kraft, and Veit Stoss, humanists such as Willibald Pirckheimer, and scientists such as the astronomer Johannes Regiomontanus lived and worked in the city. After the Thirty Years' War, Nuremberg experienced a period of economic decline. The end of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806 deprived the imperial city of its last remaining support and facilitated its annexation by Bavaria. At the same time, the Romantics discovered the city's rich cultural heritage and elevated Nuremberg to a symbol of ancient German history and culture ("the Empire's treasure chest"). In the 19th century, Nuremberg's entrepreneurial spirit once again fueled economic growth. The first German railway journey between Nuremberg and Fürth in 1835 signaled the start of this industrial boom. Manufacturing flourished, and Nuremberg became the leading industrial and working-class city in southern Germany ("the industrial heart of Bavaria") and one of the centers of the German labor movement ("Red Nuremberg"). After culturally fruitful years during the Weimar Republic, the National Socialists exploited the romantic Nuremberg myth for their own purposes in the 20th century. Hitler made Nuremberg the backdrop for the self-promotion of National Socialism at the Nazi Party Rallies. It was here that the inhumane "Nuremberg Race Laws" were enacted, and here, after the war, the major war criminals of the Nazi terror regime stood trial before the international military tribunal in the "Nuremberg Trials." Heavily damaged by bombs during World War II, the city now presents itself as a fascinating fusion of its vibrant past and modern present. https://www.nuernberg.de/internet/sta...
