AP Precalculus 2.13 Exponential and Logarithmic Equations and Inequalities Overview: AP Precalculus Topic 2.13: Exponential and Logarithmic Equations and Inequalities focuses on understanding how to solve equations and inequalities that involve exponential or logarithmic expressions and interpreting their solutions in meaningful ways. Students learn that exponential equations are those where the variable appears in the exponent, while logarithmic equations involve the variable inside a logarithm. To solve exponential equations, students often use properties of exponents to rewrite both sides with a common base, or apply logarithms to both sides to “bring down” the exponent. Similarly, to solve logarithmic equations, students use properties of logarithms (such as the product, quotient, and power rules) to simplify and isolate the variable. The topic also includes logarithmic and exponential inequalities, where students apply the same reasoning as with equations but pay attention to how inequalities behave under logarithmic and exponential transformations — particularly recognizing that an exponential function with a base greater than one is increasing, while one with a base between zero and one is decreasing, which affects the direction of the inequality. Throughout this topic, students connect the algebraic steps to the graphical meaning — recognizing how the intersections of exponential or logarithmic curves with horizontal or vertical lines correspond to the solutions they find algebraically. In short, Topic 2.13 builds students’ ability to: Manipulate and solve exponential and logarithmic equations, Apply properties of logarithms and exponents correctly, Solve related inequalities with appropriate reasoning, and Interpret solutions graphically and contextually.
