Prophetic and Quranic references about reading facial expressions There are several Qur'anic and Prophetic references that indicate the importance of observing facial expressions and outward signs, while recognizing that only Allah truly knows what is in the hearts. 1. Faces Reveal Inner States Joy and Happiness Allah says: "Faces that Day will be bright, laughing, rejoicing at good news." (Qur'an 80:38-39) This verse shows that emotions and inner states are reflected on the face. Sadness and Distress Allah says: "And when one of them is informed of the birth of a female, his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief." (Qur'an 16:58) The Qur'an explicitly describes a person's emotional reaction being visible on his face. 2. The Prophet Ya'qub (AS) Read His Sons' Expressions When the brothers of Yusuf (AS) returned with the false story about Yusuf, Ya'qub (AS) was not convinced. He said: "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something." (Qur'an 12:18) Although the verse does not explicitly mention facial expressions, scholars note that Ya'qub recognized inconsistencies in their behavior and presentation. 3. Believers Can Recognize Signs in People's Faces Allah says regarding the hypocrites: "And if We willed, We could show them to you, and you would know them by their marks; and you will surely know them by the tone of their speech." (Qur'an 47:30) This verse indicates that outward signs can sometimes reveal inner realities. 4. Recognition Through Facial Features Allah says: "The criminals will be known by their marks..." (Qur'an 55:41) And: "You will recognize in their faces the radiance of bliss." (Qur'an 83:24) These verses affirm that faces can communicate aspects of a person's condition. 5. The Prophet ﷺ Observed Facial Expressions Knowing Emotions from the Face Companions frequently reported: "We knew anger on the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Narrated by several Companions and recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. For example: "His face changed color" when he became angry regarding a matter of religion. This demonstrates that facial expressions communicate genuine emotional states. 6. The Prophet ﷺ Encouraged Smiling He said: "Your smile in the face of your brother is charity." (Reported in Jami' al-Tirmidhi) A smile is a deliberate facial expression that conveys warmth, mercy, and goodwill. 7. The Principle: Outward Signs Are Clues, Not Certainties The Prophet ﷺ said: "I have not been commanded to search people's hearts or split open their bellies." (Reported in Sahih al-Bukhari) And Allah says: "Indeed, Allah knows what is in the breasts." (Qur'an 3:154) Islamic Balance An Islamic understanding of body language and facial expressions is: Faces and expressions often reveal emotions. Observing them can help us communicate better. They may provide clues, not certainty. We should not make definitive judgments about a person's intentions or character based solely on facial expressions.
