The NATO Leaders Summit was held in Ankara on July 7-8. Prior to the summit, the government had put the capital under lockdown. Everything was banned, from demonstrations to shopkeepers placing chairs in front of their shops. However, even before these bans, on June 23, 225 people were detained on the grounds of the "possibility of them holding demonstrations." Among those detained were academics, journalists, trade unionists, and TEMA volunteers. 178 of these individuals were arrested. In the early hours of July 22, some of the detainees were released. How are things today, after approximately a month of detention? What happened during their detention? Did they expect to be arrested when they were brought to court? What were the prison conditions like? What changed after the appeal against their detention was rejected that led to the release? Why do they think they were arrested? We spoke with Assoc.
