General structure of the grapevine: Grapevines have two types of structures: aboveground and belowground. The part above the graft point is called the aboveground part, or the vine's trunk. The parts extending from the trunk to the right and left are called the vine's arms. The parts of the branches attached to the branches are called the vine's head. The head of the grapevine contains the vine's one-year-old vines and branches. Briefly, these are the graft point, the trunk, the branching section that goes left and right, the heads on the branching section, and the parts of the vine above the heads that are either one-year-old or two-year-old. What are male and female vines? How can we tell the difference between male and female vines? Male vine: This is the name given to one-year-old branches growing on two-year-old branches at the base of the vine. Female vine: This is the name given to one-year-old branches or vines that grow below the male vine with a base. How can we distinguish male and female vines? In short, female vines are always located below the male branches or vine. In other words, vines near the head, near the side branches, and close to the ground are female vines. Vines located near the base are male vines. Why are male vines removed and female vines left? When pruning, we will try to prune the male vines and leave the female ones as much as possible. One reason for this is to rejuvenate the vine, meaning to remove two-year-old sections and leave one-year-old sections. The second reason is that the male vine's development will focus its energy on branch development, not grape yield, so we prune the male and leave the female ones. This doesn't mean that grapes won't grow on the male vines. Grapes will grow on the male vines, but they won't yield enough. Pruning Grape Vines: Pruning in vineyards should be done according to the development and thickness of the vines and the grape variety. Short Pruning: This is applied to varieties with high-yielding buds. This means pruning is done at 1-3 buds. For example, short pruning is done on varieties such as Alphonse, Cardinal, Hamburg Misketi, Trakya İlkereni, Yalova İncisi, Tarsuz Beyazı, and Semillon. Semi-Long (Medium) Pruning: This is applied to varieties with moderately productive bottom buds. This means pruning is done above 4-7 buds. For example, semi-long, medium pruning is done on varieties such as Perlette, Razaki, Hönüsü, Horoz Karası, Hasandede, Papazkarası, Boğazkere, Öküzgözü, and Kalecikkarası. Long Pruning: This is applied to varieties with poorly productive bottom buds. This means pruning is done above 8-15 buds. It is usually applied to seedless grapes. Although rare, it is also used on seedless grapes. Examples for seedless grapes: Pink Seedless, Sultani Seedless, Round Seedless, and Ergin Seedless varieties. Mixed Pruning: This pruning method combines short and long pruning, especially on varieties with poorly productive bottom buds and moderately productive bottom buds. On one vine, short pruning is done above 2-3 buds. The purpose of this short pruning is to rejuvenate the vine. On the other vine, half-length or long pruning is done. The purpose of this long pruning is to harvest grapes and increase grape yield. Grafting Point on Grapevines: The grafting point on our vine must be absolutely and absolutely above the soil. If it is located underground, a collar root can form at the graft point. This can cause the vine to age and reduce grape yield. To prevent collar roots from forming from the initial planting, the graft point should be located four fingers or a hand's width above the soil. Grapevine Root System: The main root system, which extends below the graft point and continues along the main stem, consists of the collar root, lateral roots, and basal roots. Growing Root: The root structure that forms below the graft point, close to the soil. Fertilizers applied to the vineyard contribute to better growth and increased grape yields.
