Historical records do not mention Pham Binh Di's background or birthplace, only that he was an eunuch and had a son named Pham Phu. In March 1207, the local chieftains of Hong Chau, Doan Thuong and Doan Chu, revolted, building fortifications and proclaiming themselves kings. Ly Cao Tong dispatched imperial troops to attack Hong Chau, including Pham Binh Di's forces. Seeing the imperial forces' strength, Doan Thuong secretly bribed General Pham Du with wealth to pledge allegiance to Pham Du. Pham Du then requested Ly Cao Tong to spare Doan Thuong, and his request was granted. In early 1209, Ly Cao Tong appointed Pham Du to oversee military affairs in Nghe An province. Here, Pham Du rallied dissidents to rebel against the imperial court, cutting off both land and water transportation. Seeing the critical situation, Ly Cao Tong ordered Pham Binh Di to take troops from Dang Chau to suppress the rebellion. Pham Du, along with Doan Thuong and Doan Chu from Hong Chau, joined forces and rebelled, attacking Dang Chau. Pham Binh Di initially suffered a defeat, but the situation quickly reversed thanks to his effective morale-boosting tactics, causing Doan Thuong's army to scatter and flee. Pham Du also had to flee, and the imperial army pursued him to Pham Du's headquarters. Pham Binh Di confiscated and burned all of Pham Du's possessions. With this victory alone, Pham Binh Di completely changed the course of events. Afterward, the imperial army continued its victory against the Hong Chau forces at Ve Bridge. This defeat resulted in the death of Doan Chu, the second-highest ranking figure in Hong Chau. In this situation, Pham Du secretly sent someone to the capital to bribe officials in the court, saying that Pham Binh Di was cruel, killing innocent people, and recounting his unjust suffering. Ly Cao Tong summoned Pham Binh Di back to the court, and what followed was an incredibly surprising twist. It's strange, isn't it?
