Today, I'm going to tell you about a tourist spot where the Government of India has connected the Narmada River to the Kshipra River via a pipeline. The place where the Narmada River meets the Kshipra River is called the Narmada-Kshipra Sangam. This place is also known as Ujjaini because it is located near the village of Ujjaini. It is located 18 km from Indore city. Traveling from Indore to Ujjaini offers many breathtaking views along the way. The Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh has been grappling with water scarcity for the past three to four decades, which has been worsening in recent years. Continuous groundwater exploitation, erratic rainfall, and uncontrolled water use have raised concerns that the Malwa region could soon become a desert. The Narmada River is considered the lifeline of Madhya Pradesh, irrigating and providing water not only to the Malwa region but to almost all of Madhya Pradesh. Among Madhya Pradesh's other major rivers, the Kshipra River, which flows through Ujjain, is also a significant source of water. In view of the Kumbh Mela to be held in Ujjain in 2016, the then government connected the Narmada River's water to the Kshipra River through pipes, enabling the millions of devotees attending the 2016 Kumbh Mela to take a holy dip in the Kshipra River. The state government authorized the Narmada Valley Development Authority (NVDA) for this project, which was named the "Narmada Kshipra Link Project." The project, which began on November 29, 2012, was completed in a record time of 14 months. To assess the state of the Kshipra River before and after its connection to the Narmada River, the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the water were tested using methods described by the American Public Health Association (APHA, 1998). For this study, water samples were collected from four ghats (sample collection sites): Triveni Ghat, Gau Ghat, Ram Ghat, and Mangalnath Ghat, and laboratory analyses were conducted for parameters such as pH, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, chemical dissolved oxygen, hardness, alkalinity, fecal coliform, total coliform, and fecal streptococci. Observations and analyses revealed that before the Narmada River link, the Kshipra River water was relatively highly polluted, with all parameters exceeding the Pollution Control Board's standards. After the Narmada River's connection to the Kshipra River, the pollution levels decreased, and most parameters reached close to the standards set by various organizations. This study reinforces the view that the River Linking Initiative is highly effective in reducing pollution levels and can also benefit the conservation of biodiversity. The Kshipra Narmada Link Project proves that connecting rivers can improve the quality of polluted and stagnant rivers and address regional water scarcity.
