Nieuwe DS 4: scherper design en betere prijs

The new DS 4 not only gets a fresh design and an electric drivetrain, but also a sharper price tag. This makes it more competitive than ever. Many cars today are boring. Large car companies share their technology across countless models, making everything look the same. These days, everything has to be an SUV or crossover, because that sells well and offers a higher margin than a hatchback. Truly captivating design has become rare. We certainly can't say the same for this DS 4. DS is trying to differentiate itself within the large Stellantis group. Because that's technically challenging—this car shares its technology with the Peugeot 408, for example—the brand is focusing primarily on design. And that's working quite well, although it hasn't yet resulted in impressive sales figures. Still, there's no reason to change course. The rear design has barely changed, but the front is a refresh. The characteristic diamond grille has made way for a narrower strip with LED lighting and an illuminated DS logo. The daytime running lights no longer slope inward, making the car appear narrower, although it has actually become slightly wider. The trunk has grown slightly: the electric version offers 360 liters of luggage space, the plug-in hybrid 390 liters. Inside, DS truly stands out from the crowd. The materials are more refined than those of many competitors, and the typically French styling creates a unique atmosphere. The unique buttons, the meticulous finish, and the attention to detail contribute to that luxurious feel. The larger 10-inch instrument cluster is the main new feature, but otherwise, the interior is largely familiar. Under the skin, however, some things have changed. In the early years (2015-2020), DS was still somewhat lost in the dark: the cars were beautiful and luxurious, but the tuning was often too sporty. This generation has improved on that. The DS No. 4 rides comfortably and quietly. An adaptive suspension is no longer available because it was rarely ordered. The car now uses a conventional spring-damper system. The electric version has slightly stiffer springs due to the extra weight – about 100 kilograms more than the plug-in hybrid. An important detail: the electric DS 4 E-Tense is not towing, while the hybrid can handle up to 1,300 kg of trailer weight. The EV also sits 10 millimeters closer to the asphalt for slightly firmer handling. The electric version has a 213 hp electric motor on the front axle, good for 343 Nm of torque. This makes it sufficiently nimble: 0-100 km/h in 7.7 seconds, but not exceptionally fast. The 58 kWh battery offers a WLTP range of up to 450 kilometers. Fast charging is possible with a maximum of 120 kW, so a 20-80% charge takes about 30 minutes. The DS is also already suitable for vehicle-to-load, allowing you to power external devices or even feed energy back into your home. These figures are reasonable for the price, but are inferior to the (non-premium) Kia EV4, which is available for the same price with an 81.4 kWh battery pack. Besides the EV, there is a competing plug-in hybrid (PHEV) with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder (180 hp) and an electric motor (110 hp) in the 7-speed e-DCT automatic transmission, together producing 225 hp. The new 14.6 kWh battery provides an electric range of 81 kilometers, about 20 km more than before. That's not as much as, for example, the Volkswagen competition, but a good offer for the price. The DS No. 4 is available in the Netherlands from €41,090 for both the electric and plug-in hybrid variants. The standard equipment is generous: front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry, ChatGPT support, and attractive 19-inch wheels. Higher trims add Alcantara or Nappa leather upholstery, power-adjustable seats, and even laminated glass for extra quietness.
