I initially attempted to search in various directions for a story that would fulfill the commissioners’ requirement that the piece should express the narrative of a story through music. When I was struggling with the lack of ideas, I unexpectedly came across the words “Saiyuki” on a theater flyer which gave me fresh inspiration on how to approach the piece. As the story’s narrative is annotated along with the musical directions, I hope that everyone who plays this piece will be able to freely expand on their own ideas. While the story ends when Sanzo Hoshi and his team reach Tenjiku, this piece ends as they embark on a new journey after defeating the demons. Like my job, I believe that music is a journey that never ends.
