200 FEMA System That Powers Any Home on Wood
There's an 80 page document with a blue government cover sitting in a federal archive in Springfield Virginia. FEMA published it in March of 1989. It shows you, weld by weld, how to build a machine for around 200 dollars at any hardware store that will run a generator and carry every critical circuit in your home through any blackout, for as long as you can feed it firewood. Almost nobody in America has ever heard of it. That is not an accident. This is the story of wood gas. It runs through an English hillside in 1901, where an electrical engineer named Thomas Parker watched a carriage climb a grade on compressed charcoal and wrote that no community need ever lack power as long as it has trees. It runs through a converted barn near the French German border, where Georges Imbert finally solved the tar problem that had killed every earlier design. And it runs straight through the Second World War, when over a million vehicles across Europe, half a million in Germany alone, kept running after the oil stopped flowing. Korean taxis were still burning charcoal in their carburetors as late as 1970. Then the oil came back, and the technology was set down and walked away from. The American Petroleum Institute spent the postwar years making sure you would never hear the phrase spoken out loud. The Clean Air Act sealed it shut on public roads. And the FEMA manual itself carries the four words that quarantine the whole idea: FOR EMERGENCY USE ONLY. I drove ten hours to Alabama to meet a man in his seventies who has logged over half a million miles on wood he cut himself, and who pointed out the one part nobody ever made illegal: the part that plugs into your house. The law stops at the road. Your back yard is a different country.
