The cantata 'Jesus schläft, was soll ich hoffen', performed here by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, was performed on the fourth Sunday after Epiphany. On his appointment as cantor at the Thomasschule in 1723, Bach was told that his church music must not be too ‘opernhafftig’, or operatic. Might the gentlemen of the Leipzig council have cast their minds back to this condition on the second to last day in January 1724?
