Stages and Phases of Labor Understanding the stages of phases of labor can be a little confusing, but it is also very important. Being able to determine if you are in labor, and what stage of labor you are in can help you have a better birth experience. So, to better help you grasp this important childbirth information, Midwife Kira will be sharing her own homebirth story and using it to discuss identifying the specific stages and phases. Stage 1 of labor involves both the early phase and active phase of labor. Transition also occurs during this stage. Stage 2 is the pushing phase of labor until the birth of the baby. There is actually a third stage of labor which occurs after the birth of the baby until the birth of the placenta, however we will not discuss the third stage in this video since it’s mostly useful information to the healthcare providers.
