In a blistering ten year stretch, the British studio created beloved franchises like Banjo-Kazooie, while also working to evolve established IP such as James Bond. Rare had become synonymous with Nintendo during this time, and in many ways helped define the NES/SNES/N64 era. But in the early 2000s, everything changed when the esteemed developer was acquired by Microsoft. What has ensued in the agonizing 20 years since can only be described as one of the biggest fumblings of talent in gaming history.
