The residents of Kampung Beswok belong to the Temiar tribe, which is one of the largest sub-ethnic groups of the Senoi people (one of the three main Orang Asli groups in Peninsular Malaysia). Historical Lifestyle: Traditionally, the Temiar people lived nomadic or semi-nomadic lives deep within the Piah Forest Reserve, relying heavily on swidden (shifting) agriculture, foraging for forest products, hunting, and fishing. Over the decades, while maintaining a deep spiritual and physical connection to the rainforest, the community has transitioned into a settled lifestyle. Today, many villagers sustain their livelihoods through rubber tapping, small-scale farming, foraging for forest herbs, and managing local tourism. However, under the leadership of their village headman (Tok Batin Daud) and with foundational support from community organizations like the Persatuan Seni Jahitan Kreatif Malaysia, Kampung Beswok successfully pivoted toward community-based ecotourism. The village has built a highly sought-after camping and chalet site right along the crystal-clear waters of the Yum River. Visitors stay in handmade bamboo chalets or open-air bamboo gazebos. The village maintains 24-hour electricity but remains largely a "digital detox" zone with minimal to no mobile signal, preserving its peaceful, cut-off-from-the-world charm. The Temiar women of Kampung Beswok lead guided forest foraging trips, teaching visitors how to identify indigenous herbs and resources. They also run workshops on natural dyeing and eco-printing, turning local plants and leaves into sustainable textile crafts. The village serves as a major gateway for trekking to Lata Penyel, a spectacular, hidden waterfall located about a 30-minute trek further into the jungle.
