Knee pain is the second most presenting symptom in Orthopaedic OPD (next to spine problem) . Knee pain can start as early as from the age of 30 years and can progress slowly and progressively over years to develop into full-fledged arthritis. Knee Arthritis is very common after the age of 45 years. it is more common in females as compared to males. Knee arthritis is seen most commonly in overweight people not doing knee exercises regularly or suffering from other medical conditions leading to sedentary lifestyle for weak bones. Knee arthritis can be divided into four stages based on the X-rays. Stage 1 and stage 2 of knee arthritis does not require any surgery and can be treated very well with just medicines and exercises. Medicines include analgesics, anti inflammatory , muscle relaxant and cartilage protective medicines like cartigen forte and dycerin. Exercises include quadriceps and hamstring strengthening exercises. In stage 3 of knee arthritis along with exercises and medicines, Dr Himanshu Tyagi prefers to go for platelet rich plasma therapy (PRP) which actively helps in regenerating the lost knee cartilage and preventing the need for knee replacement surgery in future. Platelet rich plasma therapy is a safe and effective OPD procedure which takes hardly 5 to 10 minutes and can be done as an outpatient procedure. PRP therapy has shown excellent results and this injection can be repeated upto 3 times. In the stage 4 of knee arthritis knee replacement is an effective solution in which we replace the the worn out cartilage and bone with metallic components and plastic spacer in between. In knee replacement surgery patients are expected to stay in the hospital for 5 days during which they are taught active and passive knee exercises along with supervised rehabilitation program. Surgical sutures are removed on 15th day from the surgery. Most people are able to get back to their active life by 3 weeks post surgery.
