◼︎ On May 1, 1970, Yi Eun, the last Crown Prince of the Korean Empire, passed away. In 1907, the ten-year-old Prince Yi Eun was taken to Japan by Ito Hirobumi and began a life as a de facto hostage. Imperial Japan incorporated the Korean Imperial Family into the Japanese Imperial Family and used Prince Yi as a symbol of "internal unity" by arranging a political marriage between him and Lady Yi Bangja, a member of the Japanese Imperial Family. He graduated from the Japanese Army Academy and rose to the rank of Lieutenant General; he was compelled to walk the path of an imperialist soldier, inspecting the front lines as a Japanese general during the Sino-Japanese War and the Pacific War. Even after liberation, he was unable to return to Korea due to restrictions imposed by the Syngman Rhee government and suffered as a stateless person in Japan until 1963, when he finally returned to his homeland in a frail state.
