We've all noticed a tomato plant that was doing very well the day before and then went limp the next day. We don't pay much attention to it. The first reason that comes to mind is that it lacks water, but in this case, that's not it. The lower leaves start to yellow and brown, then dry out. The upper leaves turn a dull, faded green, and become completely limp. A few days later, the plant is dead. We pull it up, but we still don't know what disease affected it and caused it to die. It doesn't just happen to tomato plants; it can affect other nightshades and cucurbits, too. And since I've had several cases, I became interested and worked to name this disease to better understand it. I finally found that it was "bacterial wilt."
