Upon our arrival, we are greeted by locals dressed in stunning traditional Bulgarian costumes, in Bulgarian 'носия', pronounced nosiya. They welcome us with homemade bread, called in Bulgarian 'погача', pronounced pogača, served with salt and herbs — a symbol of hospitality and warmth. Watch as we join the villagers in the intricate task of rose picking, an early morning activity essential for preserving the roses' valuable essential oils. These roses are later transformed into Bulgaria's renowned rose oil, a key ingredient in perfumes and cosmetics worldwide. After the rose picking, we are treated to lively traditional folklore dances, known as 'хоро' in Bulgarian, khoro, which add to the festive and joyous atmosphere. Our journey continues at the Ethnographic Museum in Kazanlak, where we witness the traditional rose boiling ritual. The museum offers a deep dive into the history and culture of rose production, showcasing the ancient method of boiling fresh rose petals in large copper pots. This steam distillation process, passed down through generations, extracts the essential oils, highlighting Bulgaria’s rich heritage.
