HOME TOURS: Creative Interiors, Landmark Views & Bold Architectural Design | Open House
Join Sara Gore for a new episode of NBC's Open House featuring five remarkable residences that showcase inventive design, thoughtful craftsmanship, and distinctive architecture from New York City to Los Angeles. The tour begins at Sky House, a 4-bedroom penthouse located at 150 Nassau St that was designed by interior designer Ghislaine Viñas, and features a fusion of art, architecture, and creative design across four bold levels. Set atop of a 130-year-old building, this home pairs grand living spaces and sweeping city views with playful elements that challenge expectations. From a climbing column, swing & catwalk suspended above the main rooms to a sculptural slide connecting all four floors creates a sense of whimsy. Sunlight pours into the living room, while the terrace, perched on the 21st floor, offers a striking perspective on the city skyline. From a dining room illuminated by a fixture crafted from packing boxes to the floral upholstered nest with its glass floor and fireplace, every space balances imagination with livability. At the top level, the attic leads to the entrance of the slide, offering a thrilling descent. Next, interior designer Garrow Kedigian welcomes viewers into a recently completed penthouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Overlooking the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, Central Park, and the dome of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, this compact residence is designed to make the most of both its footprint and its views. A panoramic mural wallpaper introduces the apartment in the entry foyer before opening into a sun filled living room arranged around dual sectional sofas. A once awkward structural column becomes a focal point through decorative plaster detailing and gold accents. The open kitchen features a floating island topped with expressive natural stone, while a built in banquette extends into the bay window, creating an inviting perch for morning coffee above the city. In the primary bedroom, soft blush tones, an antique fireplace mantel sourced in Paris, and carefully layered textiles create a restful retreat with reservoir views beyond the windows. After that, we head west to the Pacific Palisades, where developer and architect Ardie Tavangarian presents a newly completed fire resistant residence designed in response to the 2025 Palisades Fire. Built with thick exterior walls, steel framed doors and windows, protected glazing, and automated shutters, the home was conceived to withstand wildfire conditions while maintaining warmth and comfort. Earth toned finishes, open gathering spaces, and a strong connection to the outdoors define the interiors. A communal pajama room located between the bedrooms encourages family connection, while the primary suite combines soft textures, filtered natural light, and access to a private balcony. Outside, carefully considered landscaping and outdoor living spaces extend the home's sense of calm while supporting its fire resistant design strategy. Back in Manhattan, artist Michelle Mannix opens the doors to her family's SoHo loft, created in collaboration with Erin Fearins and the team at Stollar Fearins Welch. Located within a cast iron building, the loft embraces its industrial character while introducing warmth through color, texture, and custom furnishings. Visitors arrive directly from the elevator into an art filled entry featuring Michelle's work and a vintage graphic rug. Throughout the home, expansive windows and skylights wash the interiors with natural light, illuminating a carefully curated mix of contemporary furniture and hidden storage solutions. The kitchen and dining area center around a custom banquette and a sculptural Akari light, while a newly added wall creates both display space for ceramics and privacy for the adjacent bedroom. Rich textiles, layered materials, and Michelle's artwork throughout the home create an environment that feels both highly personal and deeply functional for family life. The episode concludes in Glassell Park, Los Angeles, at Domestead, an extraordinary 1787 sq ft residence located at 2538 Sundown Drive and designed by architect William King in 1982. Realtor Ariel Putman guides viewers through the home's unconventional sequence of spaces, beginning in a garage that houses a vintage 1972 Corvette Stingray. Below, cave like interiors combine textured walls, terrazzo floors, hidden nooks, and preserved original architectural drawings. A spiral staircase leads upward to a wood lined kitchen where pine and redwood surfaces create the feeling of a woodland retreat high above the city. At the crown of the house sits the dome itself, an immersive space featuring painted panels by artist Fritz Haeg, each matching the color of the sky on a specific day. Glass panels frame views of both the surrounding hills and gardens, while a wraparound deck and wooden yurt complete this secluded hillside sanctuary.
