More about the video ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Passing with dignity – making the final decision yourself Renate B. is terminally ill. Before the pain gets the better of her, the 78-year-old wants to end her life at home with the help of Exit. For a long time, she was skeptical about whether she would ever seek assisted suicide – but when she witnessed her best friend dying with Exit, she felt this farewell to life was very dignified. She tells "Puls" why she finds comfort in self-determined death. The Netherlands Model – Assisted suicide as a task for doctors "Puls" presenter Daniela Lager travels to the Netherlands, where the mother of a colleague died a few years ago through active assisted suicide. The family doctor who injected the lethal drug at the time provides insights into the legal practice of assisted suicide, known there as "euthanasia": Death through active assisted suicide, practiced by medical professionals, is the responsibility of the healthcare system. Is a change in practice overdue? "Assisted suicide is not a matter for clubs" Uwe Güth believes that assisted suicide is not the responsibility of clubs. The doctor warns that organizations like Exit will soon no longer be able to cope with the increasing number of people seeking to die. He also criticizes the lack of training standards for laypeople. And because everyone in Switzerland has the right to establish an assisted suicide association, profiteering and abuses are inevitable. Uwe Güth demands: The state must take responsibility and recognize assisted suicide as a medical intervention and treatment. "Don't simply shift the responsibility onto the medical profession" Paul Hoff is President of the Central Ethics Committee of the Swiss Medical Association (SAMW). He clearly rejects the practice of active end-of-life care in the Netherlands. He also rejects the hypothesis that assisted suicide could be the responsibility of doctors in Switzerland. He also rejects the classification of assisted suicide as a "normal" medical intervention covered by health insurance. Society must urgently address the increasing number of people seeking to commit suicide, but it cannot simply shift the responsibility onto the medical profession. Is a change in practice unnecessary? "The Swiss Model Works" For Paul-David Borter, Head of Assisted Suicide at Exit, assisted suicide by the association works. He says they are prepared for the increasing number of requests for assisted suicide. He is not afraid of any abuses, because at least Exit operates according to strict, self-imposed criteria and quality standards. And every assisted suicide is subject to official investigation. Paul-David Borter says: The Swiss model of assisted suicide is proving its worth. 👀 Watch now: 00:00 Introduction 04:50 The different types of euthanasia 06:00 Renate B.: Dying with Exit 10:10 Uwe Güth: Criticism of Exit & Co. 14:15 Euthanasia in the Netherlands 17:59 Paul Hoff: Against euthanasia by doctors 21:53 Paul-David Borter: The Swiss model works 27:47 Last hours in Enschede ________________________ ◾ Director: Thorsten Stecher ◾ Editor: Heikko Böhm ◾ Presenter: Daniela Lager © 2025 SRF ________________________ This is Puls: The health magazine "Puls" reports up-to-date and in-depth on topics from the fields of medicine, psychology, nutrition, and fitness.
