Kellogg illuminates the ins and outs of the music industry, and what you need to know if you’d like to be part of it. John discusses the history of the business, as well as some of the directions where it could be heading: the impact that comes from technological innovation, the switch from physical to digital, etc. But, most importantly, he gives you the necessary insight into what goes on in music business contracts, such as the different types of royalty agreements, advances, the term, copyrights, all rights agreements, and all the new provisions that came with the turn of the century. He goes into great detail about copyright laws, discerning what’s fair use or not, and also explaining the steps to prove copyright infringement. Kellogg also addresses issues that are present in these contracts (which are becoming more and more complex with the new forms of making revenue) and why you should be extremely attentive to the details if “you don’t want to get played.” Finally, he explains why it’s important to have a team, going over the roles of a personal manager, business manager, road manager, booking agent, etc. After watching this 42-part video series, you’ll be more knowledgeable about all the intricacies of the music business and will be more prepared to confront it.
