It's hard to imagine that these arid slopes once housed one of the first great civilizations in history. And that its recent discovery, after years of being buried by the desert, is rewriting the history of the continent. In July 2025, Peruvian archaeologist Ruth Shady revealed the discovery of Peñico, a nearly 3,800-year-old city belonging to the ancient civilization known as Caral. But most importantly, the structures provide new evidence that the people of Caral adapted to natural disasters without resorting to warfare, a remarkably extraordinary strategy even today. "Peñico continues the Caral civilization's vision of a life without conflict," says Shady, who has led research at the site for more than three decades.
