വള്ളുവനാടൻ തിറ l Valluvanadan Thira l Kerala Art Forms l Keralascope Prime TV Valluvanadan Thira is a ritualistic art form performed in the valluvanadan region of Kerala State, India. In Thira, performer dance in costumes representing the goddess Kali, accompanied by a heavy drum 'para'. Thira is usually performed once a year in the Pooram festival season between December and May in villages connection with the Kali temple festivals,in the costal areas of River Bharathapuzha (Nila). Hence the name Valluvanadan Thira. The performance includes shouts and wild gestures and percussion and horns as well as drums. Valluvanadan Thira is an ancient folk art form performed traditionaly by the Perumannan / Mannan community associated with the temple festivals of Valluvanad and its environs at Thalappilly, Vannery and Palakkad. Eight or ten days before the festival, they dress up and go to all the houses in the respective countries to play. The performer wear large fan-shaped head-dresses and imposing masks, often with sticking-out tongues and bulging eyes. The dancer playing Thira wears a semicircular black crown with symbols of the goddess embossed on it. There is only a very large crown (hair) that is carried on the open head. Because of their large size, they can dance by tying each end of each strand at both ends of the hair and balancing the other ends with their hands. Thira's face is painted with warts and other things. The veil is also adorned with a garland. There are bells on the legs and bells on the hips and thighs. The melodious bells and whistles that occur during their walks make the Valluvanadan villages musical during the malayalam months or astrology months of Kumbham - Meenam. Each group can have more than one cover and screen. Their dancing in the backyard is very fun. From their homes, the dance troupe will receive rice, rice, cash and clothes as gifts. Eventually, they leave for their respective temples on the full moon day, play there and pay obeisance to the Goddess.
