Stanway Rovers welcomed Redbridge in a huge play-off clash with promotion to Step 3 on the line, and a crowd of 1,043 were in attendance to witness the occasion. Despite the big stage, it wasn’t a classic, with a nervy atmosphere throughout as neither team wanted to be the one to make a costly mistake. Chances were limited, and the game lacked real fluency, but the tension made it gripping in its own way. Stanway’s goalkeeper proved crucial in keeping the home side in it, producing a number of important saves to deny Redbridge and calm any growing nerves around the ground. Even so, clear-cut opportunities were hard to come by as both defences remained organised and disciplined. In the second half, Stanway had their golden chance to take control, but their striker couldn’t convert, scuffing an effort straight at the Redbridge keeper when it looked easier to score. It summed up a tense, edgy encounter where composure was at a premium. With nothing to separate the sides, the match went to penalties.
