In the Middle Ages, the city was the seat of the Lordship of the Ribeaupierre family (hence the name of the town of Ribeauvillé). THE ORIGINS OF RIBEAUVILLÉ There are traces of human occupation in the Ribeauvillé region that date back at least to the Neolithic period (-6000 to -2200), since axes dating from this period have been found. From its medieval fortifications, the town still retains today part of its ramparts and some of its defensive towers, including the "Tower of the Butchers" (13th century, rebuilt in the 18th century), which owes its name to the corporation of Butchers (responsible, in case of attack, to defend the city from this tower). According to specialists, Ribeauvillé owes its name to an old Gallo-Roman villa located to the east of the city, whose owner would have been called Ratbold, Ratbald or Ratpold. This embryo of habitats concentrated around a villae would have been called Ratbaldovillare. The Grand'rue and its picturesque quarters, lined with abundantly flowered buildings (from the 15th to the 18th century), are dotted with squares adorned with Renaissance-style fountains. Many buildings are worth a visit: The Town Hall (18th century) and its prestigious collection of silver Hanaps (drinking cups) which were given to the town by the Counts of Ribeaupierre, The Butchers' Tower (13th century) The old corn exchange, a former storage place, The house of fiddlers (house which has a unique decoration on the facade dating from 1683), etc... Many festivals punctuate the calendar of events in this town, in particular the "Pfifferdaj" (Feast of the Minstrels) which perpetuates the memory of the meetings of the brotherhood of minstrels of Alsace which met since 1481 in Ribeauvillé to elect their king there. This festival, the oldest in Alsace, which alternates the presentation of floats and brass bands (according to a different theme each year, linked to medieval times), is still celebrated today in Ribeauvillé every first Sunday of September. #france #alsace #ribeauvillé #travel #medieval #french #village #beautifulvillage
