In this video, I break down armored base layers vs traditional riding jackets and explain why I still prefer a jacket-based setup for real-world riding. For me, the biggest issue is simple: tight synthetic layers against sweaty skin are miserable. I’ve personally had skin irritation from polyester base layers, and that alone makes armored base layers much less appealing. I also talk about heat, trapped moisture, comfort during long rides, ease of taking gear off during breaks, and why I’d rather keep abrasion protection in the outer garment while choosing a shirt underneath that my skin actually tolerates. I also touch on the layering side of things, including why most airbags would probably get destroyed being over a base layer. This isn’t me saying armored base layers are bad for everyone. Some riders may love them. This is just my honest take on why they don’t fit my priorities: comfort, breathability, flexibility, and keeping tight synthetics off my skin whenever possible.
