In the mid-1930s, after fifteen years in power, Benito Mussolini was not content with his victories. His ambition grew more radical, obsessed with transforming Italians into “new men” and turning Italy into a warrior nation. In 1938, after defeating the left in the 1920s and conquering Ethiopia, he identified a new enemy: the Jews. He allied himself with Adolf Hitler, convinced that together they would rebuild an empire on the shores of the Mediterranean. But the country was no longer willing to follow him blindly. Italy fought in World War II alongside Nazi Germany, and for Il Duce, a series of failures and disillusionments began. In July 1943, his own allies deposed him and imprisoned him on the king's orders. Freed by Hitler's commandos, he took refuge in the north to lead a puppet regime, which grew increasingly cruel and bloody. In April 1945, the Italian Resistance captured him and executed him along with his mistress. Their bodies were hung upside down in a Milan square before a furious crowd. Thus ended the legend of the man millions had adored, leaving behind a divided country scarred by tragedy.
