Mr. Danger y la venta de Venezuela: Doña Bárbara de Rómulo Gallegos como alegoría del poder de USA
In chapter 6 of the third part of Rómulo Gallegos's Doña Bárbara, a scene takes place in which the gringo Mr. Danger (Guillermo el Peligroso) makes Marisela's father sign a grotesque contract by which he buys his own daughter in exchange for some bottles of whiskey. Symbolically, this event portrays, as Rómulo Gallegos suggests, a Venezuela whose elites, instead of protecting their population, hand it over to a mercantile and predatory foreign power that reduces everything to the buying and selling of goods, human beings, and natural resources, as if they were all the same. Rómulo Gallegos denounces the reality of his country, of which he himself was briefly president (for about nine months), whose corrupt and degenerate elites, represented in the novel by the barbarity of Doña Bárbara, coexist with foreign powers, destroying their own country instead of caring for it, defending it, and making it prosper. This is the result of Bolívar's legacy, who surrendered the freedom of Spanish America to British and American banks. Subscribe to the channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/Jes%C3%BAsG...
