CONFERENCE ON WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT IN TIBETAN BUDDHISM

A landmark two-day conference in Dharamshala, titled "His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama's Aspiration and Effort," brought together over 160 senior Buddhist nuns, scholars, and officials to advance the institutional and spiritual rights of female practitioners. Coinciding with the Dalai Lama's year-long birthday celebrations, the historic event featured the first-ever presentation of prayers and portraits dedicated to 21 great female Buddhist masters to address their historical underrepresentation. Key discussions highlighted the institutionalization of the Geshema degree (a doctorate equivalent) as a major milestone for gender equality. While general monastic enrollment is declining in exile, a vital influx of women from the broader Himalayan regions is stepping into these roles. Speakers and attendees emphasized that the conference resolved theological doubts, reshaped future education, and signaled a permanent, self-sustaining shift toward female leadership in Tibetan Buddhism.
