Il Petit Dru è una delle pareti più impressionanti del massiccio del Monte Bianco, sopra Chamonix. Ho scoperto questa montagna leggendo la straordinaria impresa di Walter Bonatti. Nel 1955, durante una scalata in solitaria, si trovò bloccato su una parete di granito completamente liscia: impossibile salire, impossibile scendere. In una situazione disperata, lanciò tutta la corda che gli era rimasta, riuscendo ad agganciarla a uno sperone di roccia circa dieci metri più in alto. Senza alcuna certezza che potesse reggere, si issò fino a raggiungerlo, salvandosi per pura forza e sangue freddo. Oggi, quella via non esiste più: è crollata nel tempo. In 1955, during a solo ascent, he found himself trapped on a smooth granite wall—unable to climb up, and unable to descend. In a desperate attempt to survive, he threw the last of his rope upward, managing to hook it onto a rock spur about ten meters above him. With no way of knowing if it would hold, he pulled himself up using pure strength and determination. Today, that route no longer exists—it has collapsed over time.
