The Sega Genesis is better than you think

The Sega Genesis/Mega Drive is a very capable console for its day and perhaps even beyond its lifespan. Although there were some features present in The SNES that were not a part of the Genesis through direct hardware support... Sega's console was versatile enough to brute force many of the higher level graphical effects of more advanced technologies. The SNES required additional processing help to run many of it's best games. The Genesis could handle everything all on its own. This system was truly on another level for its day.
