The incredible journey of Alpha Friendship School, Kachai in nutshell

Established in 1995, the students of Alpha Friendship School, Kachai in Manipur, come from several neighbouring villages—whose households depend on subsistence farming and daily wage labour; most of these villages do not have schools. Sunbird’s intervention in 2021 has helped the school set up its infrastructure; the sponsorship and nutrition programs now help several children from the nearby villages receive a quality education, a caring home, and nutritious food. The school currently serves 250 children from the local communities from Kindergarten to Grade 10. While they stay in the hostel, each has a rudimentary kitchen and cooks meals with friends or siblings. In the academic year 2022-23, two team members, Ayushi Pandey and Chitra Suvarna, along with three interns from Sunbird Trust’s alumni, Lansa Inka, Talu Rang, and Rinchuiba Bariamtak (sponsored for their undergraduate) were placed here. Alongside supervising all the projects on the ground at Kachai, the team worked on capacity building through teacher training for the teachers and exposure activities for the students.
