THE PRATT BROTHERS: The Real Reason Mormonism Survived Its First Decade Most people credit Joseph Smith with building the Mormon church. The evidence tells a different story. Two brothers — Parley and Orson Pratt — were arguably the most important figures in the survival and expansion of early Mormonism. One engineered the takeover of an entire congregation in Kirtland, Ohio, doubling the church's membership overnight. The other published the First Vision years before it became the church's founding narrative and gave Mormonism its first systematic theology. Both were punished for their independence. One was excommunicated for defending his wife against the prophet. The other was publicly humiliated, stripped of his seniority, and forced to retract his own ideas in the church's official newspaper — only to be quietly vindicated decades after his death when the church abandoned the very doctrine he had opposed.
